Miscellaneous Notes on Probability and Statistics
This document contains a derivation of Chebyschev's inequality for both a set of sample data, and for a continuous random variable. For the continuous case, acquaintance with the use of the probability density function to calculate probabilities is required, which in turn requires familiarity with concepts from calculus. The derivation will probably be hard going if the student has not gone past Intermediate Algebra, but hopefully the meaning of the inequality stated as equation (4) will be made more clear. A good figure would probably be helpful, but that is why I say this website is always under construction...and incomplete.
